What is preventive care?
Preventive care refers to routine healthcare that includes screenings, checkups, and patient counseling to improve health, prevent illness, disease or other health problems.
What plans are subject to the new requirements?
- If your employer-sponsored or individual health policy was created after March 23, 2010, then this provision will take effect for you on or after September 23, 2010 as soon your plan begins a new “plan year” or “policy year.”
- This provision does not apply to “Grandfathered” health insurance policies. Grandfathered insurance policies were in effect on March 23, 2010 and have not made significant changes that reduce benefits or increase member deductibles, copayments or coinsurance.
- This provision applies to Medicare effective January 1, 2011. Medicare will cover certain preventive services without charging you the Part B coinsurance or deductible. You will also be offered a free annual wellness exam. [i]
If your health insurance plan is subject to the ACA preventive services provision, then certain preventive services must be provided at no additional cost to you regardless of your deductible.[ii]
